Lecturas has the following structure: an editor (Catalina Granda Carvajal), an editorial assistant, an editorial committee and a scientific committee. This structure guarantees the quality and relevance of the contents published. Committee members are assessed every two years in terms of their recognition within the economics profession and their academic production, which must be visible in other national and international journals.
Manuscripts submitted to Lecturas must be original and unpublished and cannot be under review nor committed for publication in other outlets. Should a manuscript be accepted, editors expect that its release as an article be prior to any other publication whether in full or as a part. If an author wishes his/her paper to be featured in another publication later, the future outlet must request authorization from the journal editor and clearly include the data of the original release.
When accepting manuscripts, the editorial team considers the review undertaken by academic peers and follows criteria guaranteeing quality and research rigor. Nonetheless, authors are responsible for the ideas expressed in their papers and the ethical appropriateness of the underlying research.
Authors must make explicit that the manuscript is their sole authorship and that the intellectual property of third parties is respected therein. If material not the property of the authors is used, it is their responsibility to make sure that due authorization for the use, reproduction and publication of charts, graphs, maps, diagrams, etc., is obtained.
Likewise, authors accept that their manuscripts be sent for review to anonymous academic peers who are preferably external to their institutions of affiliation. Authors will consider the corrections suggested by the referees and, in case of adopting them, will commit to incorporating them within the timeframe set by the editor. Submission of the corrected manuscript must be accompanied by a note addressed to the editorial team in which corrections made are indicated and reasons for recommendations not adopted are explained. Once the journal receives the corrected manuscript, the corresponding author will be informed about its full acceptance for publication.
When a submitted manuscript is rejected, the editor will send a written notification to the authors explaining the reasons why the editorial team regards the paper as not suitable for publication at the journal. The editorial committee retains the last word about publication of manuscripts and the issues wherein accepted papers are released as articles. This will be kept as long as authors send all the requested documentation within the set timeframes.
Authors of accepted manuscripts will authorize, by signing the “Copyright Transfer Agreement”, the transfer of copyright for the work to Universidad de Antioquia. That way, the University can act on their behalf to publish, reproduce, distribute and transmit the article (both print and electronic versions), ensuring access to and maximum dissemination thereof. In this document, authors confirm that the manuscript is their sole authorship and respect third-party copyright.
During the editing process, authors may be consulted by the editor and/or the editorial assistant in order to solve existing questions. Both in the review and the editing process, electronic mail will be the preferred means of communication with authors.
At the reception of a manuscript, the editorial team assesses whether it meets the basic preliminary requirements of the journal. With this, the team establishes the first filter taking into account format, quality and relevance. After this first assessment, the team defines which manuscripts go through the academic peer-review process. That way, publication of manuscripts is considered by anonymous referees and the editorial team. The outcome of this process is communicated to the author within a time span not longer than six months from the reception of the manuscript. When the peer-review process exceeds such a span, the editor will inform the author about this situation.
All manuscripts passing the first evaluation filter are subjected to a review process by expert peers. These peers might formulate suggestions to the authors, propose methodological changes and/or indicate noteworthy references that have not been included in the paper. These reviewers are, in most cases, external to the authors’ institutions of affiliation. In their choice, the editorial team seeks research experience in the subject matter of the manuscript to be reviewed and lack of conflicts of interest with the authors within their field of academic performance.
At the end of the review process, referees must accept, reject or approve upon modifications submitted in a revised manuscript. During the evaluation, both the authors’ and the referees’ names will be kept under full anonymity.
The editorial team, with the participation of the editorial and scientific committees, is responsible for defining the editorial policies allowing Lecturas de Economía to fulfill the necessary standards for its positioning as a recognized academic publication. The continuous revision of these policies guarantees the journal’s improvement and that it meet the expectations of the academic community it serves.
The team is responsible, prior evaluation, for choosing the articles to be published. This choice is always based on the quality and relevance of the article to the subject matter of the journal, and on its originality and contribution to the dissemination and advance of the economics discipline. In this very sense, a rejection decision must be justified on these criteria.
The editor is responsible for editing and the review process of all the manuscripts submitted to the journal, including those of members of the editorial and scientific committees. He/she must develop mechanisms guaranteeing impartiality, punctuality and confidentiality throughout the review process up until a final decision concerning publication is made. In the same sense, it is also the responsibility of the editor to keep authors informed during the different stages of the aforementioned processes.
When the journal receives complaints or queries of any sort, the editorial team must respond in a timely manner according to the Guidelines set by the publication and, when warranted, the team must ensure that a proper investigation leading to the resolution of potential problems is carried out.
Once a journal issue is published, the editor has the responsibility for its dissemination and distribution among authors, referees, and entities with which exchange agreements are in place. Similarly, the editor is responsible for placing the articles and/or abstracts in repositories and bibliographical databases and indices at the national and international level, as well as in electronic marketing services for publication series. The editor also plays a role in sending the copies of journal issues to active subscribers.
